The Making of 3in5 - Version 1.0

3in5 is my first app which are available on both App Store and Play store. It is a simple game, and it’s definitely not a single player game. You need a partner or a group of friends to play with.

App Background

If you are a fan of the Ellen show or watch it from time to time, for the past few months you might have seen a game called 5 Second Rule, where Ellen played 1 vs 1 with the guest. The purpose of the game is to name 3 things as quickly as possible within 5 second according to what being asked in the question. Some questions are pretty simple, but you have spontaneously and instinctively to give out 3 answers before the time runs out. The best part of the game is not whether you beat the clock, but it is the creativity of the given answers. You can find videos of 5 Second Rule on Youtube and here is an example:

My girlfriend and I watched many episodes of 5 Second Rule and we want to play it too. It’s also a good game to enjoy with friends during gathering or simply to kill time.I searched through App store and Play store and found that no one had made the mobile version of this game yet. Therefore, I decided to make my own version of this game by naming it as 3in5, which means 3 things in 5 seconds.

User Interface

Because the app functionality is pretty simple, I can spare a lot of things for fancy user interface design. What 3in5 needs are a timer, a push button, and an algorithm to randomly pick a question. There are only 3 screens in 3in5: start screen, game screen, and setting screen.

Start screen is pretty clean with only one Start button. Game play screen is the main screen where users spend the most time on. There is a big count down clock at the top and a push button at the bottom. Questions are shown at the center of the screen. I added a skip button in case you find some questions not interesting. There is a setting button to lead you to Setting screen where you can see the number of total questions and the number of remaining questions. 500 questions are available. You won’t get repeated question before these 500 questions run out. You can turn on/off sound and announcer on the Setting screen. If the announcer is turned off, you have to manually push the button to start timer.

Conclusion

I am a fan of pass-and-play mobile games which are meant to be played with friends, such as Charades, Taboos, and Undercover. I hope 3in5 will bring people closer together and create more laughter anywhere and anytime.
