CAS - speak out to reach people!
19th November 2010 is World Toilet Day. Current Affairs Society in coopertation with World Toilet Organization celebrate the Big Squat event at NTU. At a booth set up besides Nanyang Auditorium, from morning 9:00 until evening 17:30, we reached almost 100 passers to take part in our Big Squat and took a picture of them for commemorating WTD and raising the awareness of the importance of toilet to poor countries. Children are the serious victims of diarrhea, bacterias, and other fatal diseases. 2.6 billion of people worldwide don't have toilet, and 1.6 million of childre die every year because of no toilet, even more serious than HIV.
I, as a part of CAS, was so pleased to reach out the passers and explain these issues to them. Even though the goodies bags were not very attractive, the passers showed their interest in our posters, banner, and orange cartons people. My tireness of standing was worthy when people were willing to have their squating photo taken. I felt proud of myself when people could appreciate what I explained to them.
It was my second time of getting passers to come to the booth and explain something to them. The first time was CAS exQUIZit, 3rd of November. We tried to get passers to come to our booth and answer some questions about world issues. It was not as difficult as I had thought. All we had to do was to show our passion and catch the key of the interest of passers.
CAS has completed its events for semester 1. I hope it will be a good start for next semester! Cheers!

Kent Ridge Park with Host Family on Deepavali
Kent Ridge park is located on the hill. Roger drove us to the top. We could see one of the most important hubs of Singapore. Roger explained us how the system of loading and unloading containers works. The hub is controlled by computer system that can analyse the order of containers to be loaded to and unloaded from every ship in order to avoid messing up.
Then, we walked across a very long canopy. Along the canopy, we could see some special kinds of trees on the two sides. It gave us a good view of islands and mountains (pulau and bukit). It used to be the battle field between the British and Japan during World War II.
After that, we went to the war museum, but it was not opened to the public during that time. We just took photos from outside.
About 6:00, we left there for dinner, but it was still early. We took a walk around Holland Village. There are many restaurant and food stores, both local and foreign. We went into a Korean restaurant, but the environment was not satisfied, so we changed to Thai restaurant, Thai Express. The food I ordered was black pepper soft-cell crab. It was very tasty.
It was not the end of our outing. Holland Village was once the title of one of the Singapore well-known dramas. It was about Coconut-juice rice, called Nasi Lemak in Malay. Because I have never eaten Nasi Lemak, Roger bought 2 boxes for Seiha and me at a store nearby.
It was a nice trip and celebration on Deepavali. Thanks to Roger and Shee Cher!

Goodbye Cambodia! Nice to meet you, Singapore!
On Sunday 29th August 2010 in the morning at 8:30, Huy came to pick me up with my brother and we went to pick up Dara C., Rathanak, Seng, and Kun. It's a bit narrow with 7 people inside a car, but we were still very pleased with our fun along the way to the International Phnom Penh Airport.
My mum and dad had already been there when we arrived at the airport. I put my 2 heavy luggae to check in. It had some problem with overload luggage more than 25kg, but it was no problem when I showed check-in desk the Letter of Scholarship issued by Embassy of Singapore.
Mouyleng, Monin, Chhoeng, Candy, Sany, and Dara H., arrived to send me off after that. They had prepared a surprise for me with a bunch of flower and 2 T-Shirts. Dara H., Lay, Chenda, Vichka, Deth, Sros, and Hak came later nearly 10:00am, when there is only 15 minutes left before departure.
While I was paying money at Service Fee Counter, surprisingly my name was announced to get on board immediately. I was the last one!!! The plane was waiting for me impatiently. Therefore, I rushed and run.
I had never imagined that I would go to passport control and luggage counter within 5 minutes. I boarded on the plane MI601 and got a window seat. That's the last moment I was in Cambodia.
Arrival at Changi Airport
I arrived at Changi Airport at 12:45 (Singapore time). The person who came to get me is Mr. Faizal, liaison officer from Ministry of Foreign Affair (MFA). I waited for another Indonesian student, Benny, who came later than me about 15 minutes. Mr. Faizal arranged a car for 2 of us to go to NTU first because other scholars were arriving late.
The first building I saw when the car came into NTU was School of Computer Engineering, in front of International House. The car dropped me at Hall 1. I went to check in at hall office with my 2 big luggage. Fortunately, I met Seiha, who was also waiting in the queue for check in, or I wouldn't have know how to do.
12-01-177 is my block-level-room number. Where is block 12? It is at the top of the hill. I was tired to death with carrying luggage. Luckily Seiha helped me carry one of them.
After settling down in the room, Seiha brought me to Nanyang Market to buy some items I didn't have. In the evening, we had dinner with other seniors at canteen 2. It made me feel comfortable to see our Cambodians at NTU.
It's hard to get to sleep for the first night. I didn't get used to the mixture of languages yet. The next morning I woke up very early, at 5:00 am. The new page of my life is flipped over!

Happy Birthday to Lai Chhoeung!
Hey Chhoeung, every time I come to your home, there is always the celebration and gathering of our friends. Your name has frequently become the title of my post. The first is the gold medalist of writing competition, then it’s Kathen, and now it’s your birthday.
My present seemed to be the smallest because I hadn’t really known what I should buy for her. It’s a simple gift, but I knew Chhoeung wouldn’t mind. She is such a good girl. I wish her beauty and wisdom forever!
The foods, “stir-fried tasty yellow noodle” and “spicy golden chicken curry”, were also very delicious. Especially the sweet and creamy birthday cake was what I’ve eaten for a long time. Look, everyone was content with the meal. Note at the back, some didn’t even care about taking the photograph, continue enjoying eating.
15th May 2010 is another day that I should remember. Why? It’s the day that we can see our friends talking, laughing, ‘deu’ing one another, bringing back the memory we were at high school. Although I didn’t talk much, but I still liked these.
After meal, it’s dancing time. Hey, everyone seemed to be so shy. Songs started to be played and no one came to the middle and danced. It took a few moment to persuade one by one to dance. Although some friends came, they went back to their seats one by one when the song hasn’t been finished yet. Time seemed to be passing so quickly. However, we still have this photo as the evidence to prove that we really had a happy birthday party of Chhoeung together!
